Introduction to the Qur’an: “From the Qur’an to Islam: Creating a Practice”
January 17, 2021 @ 8:45 am - 9:45 pm

Our canvass of the Qur’an continues this Sunday, January 17, 8:45-9:45 a.m. We will view and discuss Lecture Ten from The Great Courses, “From the Qur’an to Islam: Creating a Practice.” https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85411684152, meeting ID: 854 1168 4152, or call: (312) 626-6799. This lecture and conversation will consider how the words of the Qur’an developed into “the Five Pillars of Islam” practiced by Muslims today: Shahada (Profession of Faith), Salat (Prayer), Zakat (Almsgiving), Sawm (Fasting), and Hajj (Pilgrimage).
Last Sunday we considered the development of the Qur’an as it follows Mohammad’s prophetic career from Mecca to Medina. Enduring sacred texts, regardless of the religion they represent, must speak to the real-life circumstances of their audiences. The revelations to Mohammad in Mecca addressed the unique situation and needs of the polytheistic residents of that city, whereas the chapters revealed in Medina attended to the condition of a maturing and expanding religious community.
