Introduction to the Qur’an: “Sharia and Jihad: The Qur’an as Legal Text”
January 24, 2021 @ 8:45 am - 9:45 pm
Introduction to the Qur’an
Our survey of the Qur’an from The Great Courses continues this Sunday, January 24, 8:45-9:45 a.m. We will view and discuss Lecture 11 in The Great Courses: “Sharia and Jihad: The Qur’an as Legal Text”. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85411684152, meeting ID: 854 1168 4152, or call: (312) 626-6799.
The untranslated words sharia and jihad might best be understood, as, respectively, “searching for God’s will” and “the universal struggle for justice,” rather than the simplistic, and thus fundamentally inaccurate, concepts of judicial law and holy war. The lecture will consider the complex meaning of each term, and how they are further explicated through a rich history of fatwa, or legal opinion.
Last Sunday we explored the Qur’anic roots of the “Five Pillars of Islam”: Shahada (Profession of Faith), Salat (Prayer), Zakat (Almsgiving), Sawm (Fasting), and Hajj (Pilgrimage). We learned that the Pillars are not found as such in the Qur’an, but are only generally referred to. Their develop as formal practices came along later, supported by the Hadith (the life and deeds of Mohammad) and the Sunnah (the consensus practices of the Islamic community). As such, the Five Pillars demonstrate how the core practices of Islam, as in other religions, evolved from rudimentary forms in the sacred scriptures to established customs.
