Introduction to the Qur’an

January 10, 2021 @ 8:45 am - 9:45 pm

Introduction to the Qur’an

Our survey of the Qur’an from The Great Courses continues this Sunday, January 10, 8:45-9:45 a.m.   We will view and discuss Lecture Four, “From Mecca to Medina: The Revelation Transforms.” https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85411684152, meeting ID: 854 1168 4152, or call: (312) 626-6799.  This lecture and conversation will consider the development of the Qur’an as it follows Mohammad’s prophetic career, starting in Mecca and ending in Medina.

Last Sunday we considered how the Qur’an shifted from oral revelation and transmission to written texts, and how difficult it can be to translate the Qur’an, or any sacred text, from its original language into other languages.  How do sacred texts remain sacred as we become aware of the complex path they have taken from their original sources to the form in which we have them now?

Future lectures in this series:

January 17: “From the Qur’an to Islam: Creating a Practice” (Lecture 10 in The Great Courses)

January 24: “Sharia and Jihad: The Qur’an as Legal Text” (Lecture 11 in The Great Courses)

January 31 (final session in this series): “Qur’anic Philosophy, Theology, and Mysticism” (Lecture 12 in The Great Courses)

You are welcome to join us mid-stream in this series!  It is not necessary to have participated in any of the previous sessions!
