Spiritual Enrichment

February 5 @ 8:30 am - 9:45 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 8:30 am on Sunday, repeating until February 12, 2023

What is Evangelicalism?

Progressive Christians are often confounded by the beliefs, practices, and politics of American evangelicals.

What is evangelicalism? What is its history? Are all evangelicals the same? How do evangelicals differ from “mainline Protestants” and other Christians? What is concerning about this expression of the Christian faith? What is good about this enduring tradition within the Christian family?

On Sundays, Feb. 5 and 12Dr. Barry E. Bryant from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston will help us sort through this topic.

Barry attended Duke Divinity School and received his Ph.D. is from King’s College, London. He grew up attending a Pentecostal congregation in Tennessee, was ordained in the Church of the Nazarene, and served a congregation in Graham, North Carolina before moving to England, where he lived for seven years. Upon returning to the U.S., he transferred his ordination to the United Methodist Church. He has taught at Memphis Theological Seminary and is currently associate professor of United Methodist and Wesley Studies at Garrett where he teaches courses on Methodism, the Wesleyan tradition, the Church, the Holy Spirit, and race.

Spiritual Enrichment is WCC’s ministry of faith exploration and formation, uniting head and heart in pursuit of an honest and vibrant Christian faith that is open, relevant, faithful, and transformative.  Meeting weekly from September through May both in-person in the Centennial Room and virtually on Zoom; you choose whether to meet in-person or virtually.
